I looked out of my window the other day and realised that all the ducklings had cuddled together on the bank of the pond as their mother looked on.
These are what I call ‘teenage’ ducklings. Having hatched a clutch the mother duck appears to take them away for a few weeks and then they return, with the ducklings not quite full size but in more adult plummage. They also still keep together, following their mum wherever she goes.
I can also report that the moorhens have been much more successful with their second clutch, who are currently growing fast. However, they do have to watch out for the heron who visits the pond occasionally.
